Gary Seven

Custard Factory Gallery, Birmingham
9-14 May

Curated by Ana Benlloch, ‘Gary Seven’ is an exhibition based on a Star Trek episode from the first series. The episode featured Gary Seven, his assistant, Roberta, and his intelligent cat, and was clearly a set-up for an offshoot series, which never came to fruition. This exhibition aims to give those characters the existence they were denied by the non-appearance of this series. Benlloch, currently Debenhams Fellow at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, has curated a mixture of work from artists around the country and students from her host institution, all of which are a response to this episode in some way; be that the characters themselves or even something spotted in the background of a scene. One such work is a talking-heads-style documentary, including interviews with the (fake) cast, as if the series had gone ahead and achieved the cult status it was so clearly destined for.
