| "The a.m.o.r.
series" by Maria Malone The videos show a journey through a city street at dusk, as light is failing. It is filmed from the point of view of the person taking the journey, you see what they see. The sound is captured during filming: sounds of the city, traffic, far-away voices and the echo of the walker's high heeled shoes on the pavement. The camera work is very jerky due to being filmed while walking in high heels, the scenario is reminiscent of horror films, or crime reconstructions. The effect on viewer is visceral, slightly nausea inducing, due to the motion of the camera combined with tension and concern for the walker. This piece questions the assumptions we make when faced with such images and sounds: we imagine threat, perhaps even blame the woman for making herself a victim. However this stereotype encourages women to feel fear and guilt, to modify their behaviour, instead of feeling free to walk around their own city wearing whatever they want. Amor means love, but also stands for "At My Own Risk". 
Maria Malone is a Leicester based artist working in dance and performance, who also has links with Birmingham. She is one of the organisers of the art group ...seen... who curated two live art platforms in 2004 and 2003.
