Auslander, by Paul Ross
Slide Projection (2005)

When we see a selection of images, we try to fit them into a narrative, particularly if there are characters that we can project our fantasies and fears onto. If there is no definite plot, no easy resolution, we are sometimes even more 'hooked', desperately trying to find a meaning, fighting against the possibility that there is none, that life is just a random series of events.

This work touches on the themes of identity loss, predetermined fate & madness, the narrative focusing on an individual's ambiguous relationship with the environment around him. Of course due to the nature of the work, the identity of the exact individual is left open to question, it being a subjective response as to whom the stranger is in this scenario.
