A stranger drifts
into town or someone goes on a journey There are only two stories: someone arriving somewhere or someone going somewhere, perhaps these are even the same story. Someone coming to town has just been on a journey, the traveller will be a stranger wherever they go. This is the story of artists from the East and West Midlands going on a journey, exploring the mental and physical geography they are part of, and working together to build something new. The artists have responded to the title literally, metaphorically or just by looking at the idea of narrative itself. Stories are made up of at least one character, and the passage of time. No physical journey has to take place: we are used to mentally drawing a time line with a beginning, a middle and an end. Different elements of the exhibition mingle to build an uncanny atmosphere from the things we notice when we are in an unfamiliar place. The journey is an internal one too: the fear of walking through dark alleys; the narrative sparked by images and objects; the agitation, boredom and expectation of waiting. We are all engaged in an emotional, physical, and spiritual journey through time and space, and although we have our own path to follow, we are travelling together.
